ישעיהו, פרק ל״ז, פסוק כ״ג

Speaking on behalf of the Daughter of Zion, the prophet delivers a piercing rebuke to Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, confronting his sheer arrogance. The prophet challenges the king's lack of understanding regarding the true nature of his opponent, wondering rhetorically why the king did not pause to realize exactly who he was insulting [מצודת דוד]. Even though Sennacherib knew he was challenging the God of Israel, he completely misunderstood His true strength. The Assyrian king mistakenly assumed that God was weak, viewing Him as no different from the powerless idols of the other nations he had already conquered [שד"ל].

The severity of Sennacherib's actions is highlighted through an escalation in his mockery. He began with general insults, the kind that might be directed at ordinary human beings, but then crossed the line into direct blasphemy aimed specifically against God, His holiness, and His teachings [מלבי"ם].

This audacity continued to grow in a highly public manner. The king did not keep his contempt quiet; he raised his voice, ensuring his mockery was loud and widely heard. Furthermore, he arrogantly lifted his eyes toward the heavens [מצודת דוד, שד"ל]. This upward gaze revealed his ultimate intention. His primary goal was not merely to anger or break the spirit of the besieged people, but to directly provoke and disrespect God Himself [מלבי"ם].
