ה֕וֹי גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים לִשְׁתּ֣וֹת יָ֑יִן וְאַנְשֵׁי־חַ֖יִל לִמְסֹ֥ךְ שֵׁכָֽר׃

Proper leadership demands strength, wisdom, and honesty. Yet, these essential traits are sometimes twisted into channels of self-indulgence and corruption. The prophet directs a deeply ironic critique at the leaders and judges of the nation. These individuals boast of their great power, but they squander it on empty pursuits. Instead of applying their might toward serving God, defending against enemies, upholding justice, or rescuing the oppressed, their so-called heroism is measured entirely by their capacity to consume massive quantities of wine [רד״ק, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. Those entrusted to be fearless champions of justice have drowned their wisdom and true courage in drunkenness and pleasure. Consequently, they abuse their high standing to distort justice, eagerly clearing the guilty in exchange for bribes [מלבי״ם, שד״ל, אבן עזרא].

The mockery continues by referring to these figures as men of valor. The primary approach among commentators is that this simply echoes their physical might, emphasizing their raw power [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. However, other perspectives draw a sharper distinction between the titles. One approach suggests that while a hero relies on natural physical tolerance to consume the wine, a man of valor represents someone who has acquired deep skill and tactical knowledge through study. Tragically, this expertise is applied only to the craft of mixing and serving alcoholic drinks [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective understands this title as referring to men of great wealth and property. Rather than utilizing their financial resources for charitable acts or spiritual elevation, these affluent individuals squander their fortunes on purchasing vast amounts of alcohol [רד״ק, אברבנאל].

The specific action these men engage in involves preparing strong drink. The general consensus is that this refers to the careful mixing and enhancing of the beverage [רש״י, מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. It points to the practice of blending various spices into the wine to increase its potency and intoxicating effects [שד״ל]. An alternative view suggests the action implies pouring in great volumes, highlighting their excessive drinking habits [אבן עזרא]. However, this is contested by others who demonstrate from other biblical contexts that the action strictly involves the deliberate mixing and preparation of the drink, rather than just the pouring of it [שד״ל].
