Joshua 24:20Sefaria

Choosing a spiritual path is a serious commitment that cannot be easily undone. The choice to serve God creates a binding, irreversible reality, meaning that those who commit to Him cannot simply walk away without facing consequences [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The warning to the people makes it clear that turning away to worship idols will lead to a harsh punishment, ultimately bringing about their complete destruction [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A central element of this warning is the direct link between the future punishment and the goodness God previously provided. Commentators explore this connection on two complementary levels. On the level of human experience, the suffering will be felt much more intensely. When someone grows accustomed to a good life and suddenly experiences a downfall, the pain they endure is twice as deep as that of someone who has never known comfort [מצודת דוד].

On a deeper level regarding how God governs the world, the past goodness is the very reason the punishment will be so severe. God blessed the people through close, personal involvement, lifting them above the standard laws of nature. If they abandon Him, this exact same unique and focused attention will reverse and act against them. Had they never been elevated to receive such a special level of divine care, they would not face such a devastating downfall [מלבי״ם].
