The dialogue between the people and Joshua ends with a final confirmation of their commitment. Through their words, the people serve as their own witnesses, formally accepting the responsibility to serve God and obey Him [מצודת דוד].
Their pledge shows a deep level of faith and rests on two main ideas. First, they commit to serving God exclusively. This means they completely reject any partnership with outside powers, choosing to worship Him alone. Second, they promise to listen to His voice, which reflects a pure acceptance of the Commandments. This obedience is not driven by the hope of a reward or the fear of punishment. Instead, it comes from a genuine, inner desire to follow God simply because the Commandments are His [מלבי״ם].
