Joshua’s military campaign against the city of Ai involved a carefully planned deception. To secure victory, he deployed an additional force of five thousand warriors to execute a complex strategy. The primary approach among commentators is that these five thousand men were a completely separate unit from the thirty thousand soldiers deployed earlier in the campaign [חומת אנך]. By bringing in this additional group, Joshua created a strategic formation of an ambush behind an ambush. While the first strike force was hidden far away, this second group was positioned much closer to the city [רש״י, מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Specifically, they were stationed to the west of Ai [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This setup created a clever flanking maneuver. The second ambush anchored itself near the main Israelite camp, which sat to the north, and stretched westward. It functioned like an extension reaching out from the main camp, designed to surround the enemy from multiple sides. In stark contrast to the first ambush, which remained entirely out of sight, these five thousand men did not hide at all. The defenders of Ai could see them clearly [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

This open deployment served important psychological purposes. For the Israelites, it provided necessary reassurance. The soldiers were afraid of being left alone in the northern camp without backup, so keeping the forces close together eased their fears. At the same time, Joshua personally went down into the valley to lead the people, proving to them that God was with them and that their ultimate rescue depended entirely on Him.

For the king of Ai, the visible, complex movements of the Israelite troops—shifting from north to west and doubling back—were meant to create an illusion of chaos. Watching these shifting formations, the king mistakenly believed that the Israelites were confused and terrified. This careful deception successfully lured him into abandoning the safety of his city to march out into open battle [אלשיך].
