Psalms 69:19Sefaria

A cry for help often bursts forth from a deep sense of distance and distress. In moments of severe hardship, a person seeks an intimate closeness with God and a double rescue, hoping for protection from both spiritual dangers and physical threats. The primary approach among commentators is that during times of trouble and exile, God can feel far away. Therefore, the plea is for God to draw near to the soul and actively redeem it Alternatively, this plea can be understood as a request for God to bring the actual time of the soul's redemption closer [אבן עזרא].

A fundamental distinction exists between the soul and the body, requiring two different types of salvation. The soul requires redemption, an act that stems from a close, family-like relationship, much like a relative coming to the rescue. The soul is essentially close to God, acting as a piece of the Divine itself [מלבי״ם]. The physical body, on the other hand, requires being ransomed and saved from the hands of enemies who wish to destroy it [מלבי״ם].

In a similar spirit, this prayer reflects the struggle of someone in exile facing the ultimate test of faith. The plea for closeness is a desperate request for God to cling to the person's soul, granting them the strength to endure the trial and remain faithful, even at the cost of their life. Following this spiritual victory, the prayer asks for God's kindness to expand further, ransoming the physical body from death and bringing down the enemies instead [אלשיך].

The underlying reason for this plea for salvation is deeply tied to the enemies themselves. Saving the individual is necessary to prevent the desecration of God's name. If a faithful person falls into the hands of their foes, those enemies might become arrogant, believing in their own supreme power and claiming that God is powerless to save Furthermore, these foes are committing acts of violence and are not merely personal enemies of the individual, but actively stand as enemies of God Himself
