תהלים, פרק ס״ט, פסוק כ׳

Psalms 69:20Sefaria

A person in deep distress often finds profound comfort simply in knowing that the Creator is fully aware of their pain. In the midst of intense suffering, the poet turns to God, finding solace in the fact that nothing of his ordeal goes unnoticed. He experiences every possible form of disgrace and humiliation [רד״ק]. Yet, God sees beyond just the outward acts of cruelty committed by these enemies; He knows exactly what is hidden in their hearts and recognizes their deep-seated desire to degrade the poet [אבן עזרא]. This suffering, however, is not the result of personal conflicts. Rather, the poet bears this heavy burden purely for the sake of God, an endurance that is deeply tied to his ultimate spiritual redemption [מלבי״ם].

Beyond knowing the victim's pain, God maintains complete oversight of those causing the harm. The primary approach among commentators is that all the enemies, along with their actions and secret plots, are completely exposed before God. They cannot hide from Him, even if they mistakenly believe that their wicked deeds go unseen [רד״ק, מאירי, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Taking a deeper approach, this dynamic represents more than just God watching the enemies; it signifies a direct opposition. Because the poet suffers for his devotion to God rather than for his own personal honor, the people attacking him are actually fighting against God Himself. This reality explains how God can step in and save the poet without interfering with the general rule of human free will. When individuals channel their wickedness directly at God, He actively intervenes against them [אלשיך]. Ultimately, God positioning Himself directly against these enemies serves as the very foundation for the poet's physical rescue from their hands [מלבי״ם].
