תהלים, פרק ס״ט, פסוק כ״ט

Psalms 69:29Sefaria

יִ֭מָּחֽוּ מִסֵּ֣פֶר חַיִּ֑ים וְעִ֥ם צַ֝דִּיקִ֗ים אַל־יִכָּתֵֽבוּ׃

A desperate cry for absolute justice seeks to deny the wicked any right to exist, both in the present reality and in eternity. The concept of a heavenly book recording human destiny carries multiple layers of meaning. It can be understood as the heavens themselves, where all future decrees have been engraved since the dawn of creation [אבן עזרא]. Alternatively, it represents the specific ledger where God records the judgment of humanity [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or the ultimate register that grants a soul the right to eternal life in the World to Come [רד״ק, מאירי].

The plea against the wicked is expressed in a twofold manner: a request for their erasure, followed by a prayer that they not be recorded alongside the righteous. While this might simply be poetic repetition emphasizing a single thought [רד״ק], other approaches identify two distinct stages of divine judgment. The call for erasure addresses the possibility that the wicked might have already secured a place in the book of life due to a handful of good deeds or a temporary majority of merits. The prayer asks for this temporary right to be revoked. Conversely, the plea that they not be recorded applies to a scenario where their judgment has not yet been finalized, asking that they be denied a favorable decree moving forward [מצודת דוד, אלשיך].

On a deeper level, this reflects the divine judgment process that occurs on the Jewish New Year, when three distinct books are opened before God: one for the completely righteous, one for the completely wicked, and one for those in the middle. The complex plea mirrors these three books. The request for erasure corresponds to the book of the wicked, whose fate is sealed for death. The book of life represents the ledger of the righteous, who are sealed for life. Finally, the prayer that they not be recorded with the righteous targets the book of the intermediate individuals, whose fate hangs in the balance until the Day of Atonement. Ultimately, the prayer asks that the enemies be denied entry into the book of the righteous and stripped of the second chance afforded to those in the middle, ensuring they are immediately and permanently recorded among the completely wicked [תורה תמימה, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
