דניאל, פרק ג׳, פסוק כ״ד

Daniel 3:24Sefaria

The execution of the three men suddenly transforms into a scene that shatters the boundaries of nature, completely unraveling the expectations of the most powerful ruler on earth. Struck by a sight that defies logic, the king is overcome with shock and anxiety, leaping from his seat in sheer panic [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Desperate to ground himself in reality, he immediately turns to his royal counselors, leaders, and officers [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He asks them a rhetorical question designed to confirm the exact facts of the execution, as the scene unfolding before him is the complete opposite of what just occurred [מלבי״ם, אלשיך].

He first verifies that exactly three men were cast into the flames, though he now clearly sees four figures. He then confirms that the men were securely bound. They had remained tied up until the very second they entered the fire, eliminating any chance that their ropes had accidentally come undone before they fell into the furnace [אלשיך]. Despite this, he now sees them walking about freely. Finally, he recalls that they were thrown directly into the raging fire with the clear intent that the fall and the flames would destroy them, yet they remain completely unharmed [מלבי״ם].

Adding to the king's profound dread is a horrifying contrast: his own mighty guards, who had carried out the execution, were burned to death merely standing outside the furnace, while the condemned men survived safely inside it [יוסף אבן יחיא]. Observing this undeniable wonder, the royal counselors realize that a supernatural event has taken place and confirm the king's recollection of the facts as absolute truth [רש״י, אלשיך].

The fourth figure the king sees is described as an angel. The deep meaning of this event reveals the true nature of the miracle. Initially, the angel of hail sought to descend and cool the flames. However, the angel Gabriel, who governs fire, was sent by God to perform a miracle within a miracle. Rather than neutralizing the flames with the opposing force of cold, the angel used the higher spiritual source of fire to command the physical flames. He intensified the heat on the outside of the furnace to consume the guards, while simultaneously cooling the inside to protect the condemned men. This precise manipulation proved to the king that fire is not a blind, uncontrollable force of nature. Rather, it is entirely subordinate to God's providence, directed by a spiritual power that operates with intellect and choice [מלבי״ם].
