Daniel 6:28Sefaria

Following the astonishing survival in the lions' den, King Darius issues a kingdom-wide decree demanding profound reverence for Daniel's God. The king publicly declares Him to be supreme, ruling above all other powers [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The royal proclamation highlights God's ability to pull His followers back from the brink of death. While there is broad agreement that God redeems those who fear Him, the nature of this specific rescue goes further. God does not merely snatch a person from certain death; He also ensures complete protection from any secondary harm or injury. Daniel did not just survive the pit; he emerged entirely untouched and whole [אלשיך].

Beyond personal salvation, God is recognized for performing extraordinary acts in both heaven and earth. These events are entirely supernatural, operating completely outside the established laws of nature [מלבי״ם]. The connection between the heavenly and earthly realms in this event reveals a deeper layer of the miracle. Had God simply prevented the execution from taking place, it would have been a standard rescue. However, because Daniel was already cast into the pit, the lions themselves had to act against their predatory instincts. Every physical creature on earth is driven by a corresponding spiritual force in heaven. To alter the behavior of the lions below, God first had to overpower their guiding spiritual force above. Therefore, the divine signs took place in the spiritual realm of heaven, resulting in the visible, astonishing wonders witnessed on earth. This absolute authority over nature is a condition woven into the fabric of the universe during the days of creation [אלשיך].

The tangible proof of this power is Daniel's specific rescue from any possible strike or swipe of the beasts. The miracle was intensely personal. It was not a natural occurrence, nor were the animals simply lacking appetite. The lions were fully capable and hungry, a fact proven moments later when they immediately devoured the informers who were subsequently thrown into the pit [אלשיך].

Ultimately, these events serve as a lasting testament for the people of Israel. Even when they find themselves in exile and subjugated under the rule of foreign enemies, God's ultimate authority and watchful care over them remain constant and unbroken.
