Exodus 16:17Sefaria

The Israelites ventured into the desert to collect their daily provision of heavenly bread, intending to follow the divine directive to gather a precise amount for each person. While the people obeyed the instructions, the practical reality of gathering created disparities. Some collected a large amount, while others gathered very little. Commentators offer several ways to understand this difference. A simple explanation is that the varying amounts reflected family size; individuals with large families naturally needed to gather more, while those with smaller families gathered less Others suggest that because the people were out in the field without measuring tools, they had to rely on rough estimates rather than precise calculations A third perspective focuses on the character and intentions of the gatherers. Some were quick, greedy, or lacked complete trust in God, leading them to hoard a large quantity. Conversely, others were slow or indifferent and gathered very little

These varying amounts raise a question about how the people could have fully complied with the strict instruction to collect exactly one omer per person The primary approach among commentators is that a profound miracle took place. When the Israelites returned to their tents and measured their harvest, they discovered that regardless of how much or how little they had collected, everyone possessed exactly one omer per person. The one who gathered excessively had no surplus, and the one who gathered sparingly lacked nothing Alternatively, some commentators offer a natural explanation, suggesting that after measuring the food in their tents, those with an excess simply discarded the leftovers, while those with a deficit returned to the field to gather the rest Another natural explanation proposes that the balance was achieved within the family unit itself. Since adults consume more and children consume less, the surplus from the children's portions compensated for the adults' larger appetites, resulting in a perfect average of one omer per person [שפתי כהן].

Beyond the quantities gathered, the heavenly bread possessed other miraculous qualities. Its taste adapted perfectly to the specific needs of whoever was eating it. Infants tasted milk, young men tasted honey, and the elderly tasted bread. For the sick, it transformed into a soft, sweet mixture of fine flour, oil, and honey [שפתי כהן]. Furthermore, the precise distribution of the food served as a divine tool for resolving social disputes and legal questions. In cases involving doubts about the ownership of a slave or questions of paternity, Moses would simply observe which tent received the daily portion for the individual in question, thereby bringing the truth to light [בכור שור].

This daily routine of gathering imparts profound lessons about faith and human effort. From a practical standpoint, it demonstrates that excessive physical labor and the desire to hoard wealth are ultimately futile. Every person received their exact, divinely appointed ration from God, meaning that anyone who toiled to gather extra only wasted their time [מלבי״ם]. On a social and spiritual level, the equal distribution of the food carries a powerful message about how to treat others. God provided an identical measure to everyone, regardless of whether they were spiritually sensitive individuals who revered the holiness of the food, or those who disrespected it and violated the commandments. This teaches that we must offer material and spiritual assistance to every person equally, without judging who might be more or less deserving of help [חומש קה״ת].
