II Kings 18:6Sefaria

King Hezekiah achieved a level of absolute devotion to God that went far beyond personal piety, directly shaping his political and military leadership. His deep connection to God involved a profound understanding of Him and a steadfast commitment to walking in His ways, serving as a testament that the king remained entirely free from sin [רלב״ג].

His dedication to religious observance was remarkably comprehensive. Fulfilling the Commandments given to Moses meant more than just keeping the laws written in the Torah. It also included strict obedience to the decrees of the sages, since following their guidance fulfills a broader biblical mandate to never turn away from their instructions [חומת אנך].

This spiritual perfection carried significant practical consequences. Because of his profound closeness to God, Hezekiah earned divine assistance and achieved victory in all his military campaigns. Furthermore, his absolute trust in God's salvation gave him the courage to rebel against the Assyrian king and refuse to live as a vassal. This approach stood in stark contrast to the actions of his father, Ahaz, who had surrendered to Assyria and willingly accepted a state of servitude. Instead of relying on human military strength, Hezekiah placed his trust entirely in God [אברבנאל].
