Joshua 24:14Sefaria

Following a sweeping historical review of the many miracles and kindnesses God performed for the Israelites, a firm and clear demand is placed before them. Having settled in the land and received such immense goodness, the time has arrived for absolute dedication. They are called to commit to the exclusive worship of God and to completely sever ties with the idolatrous influences that lingered throughout their historical journey

This expectation of worship must stem from a profound awe of God's greatness and a sense of pureheartedness. It cannot be driven by a fear of punishment or the expectation of a reward [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. The requirement is for complete and wholehearted devotion [רד״ק]. It firmly rejects any form of fake worship or actions motivated by hidden, ulterior intentions [מלבי״ם].

The call to remove foreign gods operates on two distinct levels. Internally, it is a demand to completely uproot any thought of idolatry from the heart [מצודת דוד]. Practically, it addresses the historical reality that the Israelites were constantly surrounded by idol worship. This exposure began with their ancestors across the river, continued through their time in Egypt where many adopted local practices, and persisted upon entering the land of Canaan

Beyond mere exposure, the people actually possessed silver and gold idols. These were either taken as spoils of war from conquered cities or brought out of Egypt [רד״ק]. Even though the Israelites were righteous, they faced a real struggle in destroying these statues. The difficulty lay in the human desire to keep the precious metals for their significant economic value. Because of this financial temptation, an explicit instruction was necessary to ensure the idols were destroyed [אלשיך].

Ultimately, true worship of God cannot be mixed with other beliefs; it demands complete exclusivity [מלבי״ם]. In fact, the very act of destroying these idols and willingly sacrificing the financial gain of their silver and gold is, in itself, an essential part of serving God [אלשיך].
