ויקרא, פרק ח׳, פסוק ד׳

פרשת צו

Leviticus 8:4Sefaria

Moments before the inauguration of the Tabernacle and the consecration of Aaron and his sons into the priesthood, a unique event unfolds that blends meticulous human preparation with supernatural wonder. The entire nation gathers to witness this historic occasion. Moses’s initial actions reflect strict obedience to God’s instructions, even though the actual dedication rites have not yet begun. This early compliance lies in his preliminary organization. He gathers the necessary individuals and sacred items, instructing the congregation to assemble [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His planning is exact; he arranges the priestly garments precisely in the sequence they will be worn, ensuring that each piece is handed to him at the correct moment without missing a single step [מלבי״ם]. Beyond the immediate ceremony, this preparation also includes establishing the long-term structure of the holy service by setting up the future work shifts for the priests and Levites [העמק דבר, אדרת אליהו].

The people's arrival may have been entirely spontaneous. Seeing Moses gather Aaron, his sons, and the sacred garments, the nation likely comes together on their own accord without waiting for a formal command [אור החיים]. However, their destination at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting presents an enormous logistical challenge. It seems physically impossible for six hundred thousand men to fit into such a confined area. The primary approach among commentators is that a revealed miracle occurred where a small physical space expanded to accommodate a massive number of people. When Moses himself questioned how the entire nation could stand at the entrance, God assured him that just as He stretched out the heavens, He possessed the power to expand this space. This phenomenon joins a historical pattern of similar spatial miracles, such as Mount Sinai expanding to hold the nation and myriads of angels, the entire Israelite camp fitting between the poles of the Ark at the Jordan River, and the future expansion of Jerusalem to hold all those resurrected [רבנו בחיי, צאינה וראינה, אור החיים].

This miracle of spatial expansion carried unexpected social consequences. Ordinarily, the tribe of Levi and the priests receive no inherited land, a fact that would typically prevent jealousy or suspicion of nepotism regarding Moses's appointment of his brother. Yet, witnessing the miracle at the entrance of the Tabernacle, the people realized that God's servants are not bound by the natural limits of space or time. They understood that the priests would be sustained abundantly and miraculously, even without agricultural land. This realization could have sparked suspicion that Moses invented the priestly appointments himself to secure a life of miraculous ease and grandeur for his family. Consequently, Moses later had to stress that the entire procedure was executed strictly by God's command and not born of personal preference [חתם סופר].

During this gathering, the physical arrangement of the crowd was highly specific. The people stood with their faces directed toward the sanctuary. Moses positioned himself in front of them, much like a cantor leading a congregation. Because he spoke directly to the people face-to-face, his back was turned toward the holy sanctuary, mirroring the traditional seating arrangement of the elders [תורה תמימה].
