פרשת חקת

Numbers 21:16Sefaria

וּמִשָּׁ֖ם בְּאֵ֑רָה הִ֣וא הַבְּאֵ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָמַ֤ר יְהֹוָה֙ לְמֹשֶׁ֔ה אֱסֹף֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם מָֽיִם׃ {ס}

During the Israelites' journey through the desert, water served as both a physical necessity and a tangible testament to Divine providence. A pivotal stop centered around a well marks a moment of revelation, where water bursting forth in an arid wasteland moved the people to sing a song of gratitude. The primary approach among commentators is that this location was named specifically for the miracle that occurred there, rather than being a standard city on their itinerary [רמב״ן, רלב״ג, העמק דבר, רש״ר הירש]. Views vary regarding its exact geographic location. Some suggest the Israelites bypassed the border of Moab entirely [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך], while others identify the site as Kadesh in Edom [ביאור יש״ר, חזקוני]. Alternatively, the event may have unfolded in the plains of Moab, where the miraculous well that had accompanied the nation as a traveling rock finally settled into a permanent, stationary well [הכתב והקבלה].

This was not a newly created spring, but the famous well from the waters of Meribah, provided during the fortieth year of their travels. It is distinctly different from the water source provided at Rephidim at the beginning of their journey. At Rephidim, God commanded that only the elders be gathered, whereas here, He instructed that the entire nation be assembled, confirming this as the later miracle [ביאור יש״ר, העמק דבר].

Beyond the provision of water, a hidden miracle took place connected to the Israelites' victory over the Amorites. The well flowed down into the valleys, carrying up the blood and limbs of the defeated enemies and parading them around the Israelite camp. God orchestrated this to reveal the unseen miracles He performed on their behalf. This is compared to a person who feeds a baby and must inform the mother of the kind deed [רש״י, רא״ש]; the baby represents the Israelites, and the mother symbolizes the Divine Presence [משכיל לדוד]. This extraordinary display also demonstrates that the well was not fixed in one spot but actively circled the camp, allowing the tribal leaders to draw water channels directly to their respective tribes [ברכת אשר על התורה].

The nature of the water itself was miraculous. The well was situated significantly lower than the Israelite camp. Defying the natural law that water flows downward, it surged upward from the depths through Divine power. Witnessing this physical impossibility is what inspired the Israelites to break into song, calling for the well to spring up [ספורנו].

The timing of this joyous song raises a question: why did the nation wait until the end of their journey to sing, rather than when the well was first given? A miracle is fully acknowledged only when it reaches its absolute conclusion. Once the Israelites arrived at the border of the land and the well ceased its flow because it was no longer needed, the miracle was complete, and the song of gratitude was fully justified [העמק דבר, רש״ר הירש].

Noticeably absent from this song of praise are the names of Moses and God. Moses had been punished for his earlier sin of striking the rock to produce these very waters, making it inappropriate for him to praise the instrument of his downfall. Because Moses's name was omitted, God's name was left out as well [רא״ש]. Furthermore, the song was designed to emphasize the absolute perfection of Divine action in contrast to Moses's flawed execution at Meribah. God provided the water entirely on His own, without any intervention from Moses and without the people even asking, demonstrating His direct and unmediated power [ספורנו, מלבי״ם].
