תהלים, פרק ס״ט, פסוק כ״ד

Psalms 69:24Sefaria

תֶּחְשַׁ֣כְנָה עֵ֭ינֵיהֶם מֵרְא֑וֹת וּ֝מׇתְנֵיהֶ֗ם תָּמִ֥יד הַמְעַֽד׃

A prayer for the complete downfall of enemies often relies on vivid physical imagery to express a total loss of power, stability, and status. By asking for the bodily breakdown of the wicked, the plea captures a desire for their ultimate ruin.

The request for darkened vision operates on both a practical and a conceptual level. Practically, the inability to see is the direct cause of stumbling and falling [אבן עזרא]. A lack of sight prevents the wicked from noticing the hidden traps and snares placed in their path, ensuring they are caught [מלבי״ם]. On a conceptual level, the darkening of their eyes represents a failure of their vision; they are prevented from ever seeing their evil hopes and wicked plots come to life [מאירי]. From a historical perspective based on the teachings of the sages, this curse is directed at the period of the Median exile and the harsh decrees of Haman. It functions as a precise punishment of measure for measure. Just as the Median empire darkened the faces of the Israelites through forced fasting and sorrow, the prayer asks that the eyes of the oppressors be darkened in return [אלשיך].

The direct result of this blindness is physical collapse, specifically a loss of bodily stability. The plea asks God to cause the enemies to slip and lose their footing [מצודת ציון, רד״ק, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The focus on the waist, or loins, is deeply intentional. Physiologically, when a person cannot see their path and their feet suddenly slip out from under them, the resulting shock and pain are felt primarily in the waist [מצודת דוד]. Furthermore, the waist serves as the body's center of gravity. It is the core from which a person derives their upright posture and physical strength [רד״ק]. Therefore, the collapse of this core acts as a powerful metaphor for the enemies falling from their high rank, pride, and strategic planning, leaving them completely without a foundation [רד״ק, מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This physical breakdown also carries an element of measure for measure. Because the forces of evil braced themselves and gathered their core strength to harm the Israelites, the prayer asks that their own strength buckle and collapse [אלשיך].
