Daniel 4:9Sefaria

A majestic vision of a towering tree serves as a powerful symbol of a vast and perfect kingdom, one that extends its protective reach over the entire world and provides endless sustenance [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The natural beauty and scale of this tree are not merely physical descriptions, but an allegory for a sprawling empire that shelters and feeds countless nations.

The vision first highlights the striking beauty of the tree's canopy. There are different views on exactly what makes it so beautiful; some suggest the focus is on its handsome branches [רש״י, אבן עזרא בשם יפת], while others believe it points to its magnificent leaves [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון, אבן עזרא, יוסף אבן יחיא]. In an allegorical sense, this lush foliage represents the secure and dignified protection offered by King Nebuchadnezzar. Unlike an ordinary tree that sheds its leaves in winter and fails to provide steady shade, this tree retains its glory. This signifies that those who seek refuge under the king's rule are granted consistent safety, honor, and pride, rather than being left exposed to disgrace [אלשיך].

Beyond its appearance, the tree yields a massive amount of fruit This incredible harvest symbolizes the vast wealth, income, and resources of the empire [אלשיך]. The sheer volume of produce ensures there is enough food to sustain every living creature

The scene then shifts from the tree's potential to its active role in the world [מלבי״ם, אלשיך]. Wild animals are seen gathering in its shade [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד], and birds make their homes within its branches [רש״י]. These animals and birds serve as a metaphor for the many subjects and armies that find security under the kingdom's protection [אלשיך]. Ultimately, the tree is shown actively feeding all flesh. It does not merely hold the capacity for nourishment, but practically and constantly sustains the world [מלבי״ם]. The abundance of this empire is so great that it provides enough to feed not only all of humanity but every living creature on earth
