Exodus 16:10Sefaria

וַיְהִ֗י כְּדַבֵּ֤ר אַהֲרֹן֙ אֶל־כׇּל־עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּפְנ֖וּ אֶל־הַמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְהִנֵּה֙ כְּב֣וֹד יְהֹוָ֔ה נִרְאָ֖ה בֶּעָנָֽן׃ {פ}

Following a period of bitter complaints, a dramatic turning point unfolds in the desert. A stern message of rebuke paves the way for a sudden divine revelation, shifting the mindset of a fearful nation and allowing them to witness God's guiding presence firsthand.

Aaron delivers a lengthy, moral address meant to awaken the Israelites to repentance [מלבי״ם]. It is no coincidence that Aaron is the one leading this moment, as the protective clouds of glory that accompany the nation are granted specifically in his merit God's response to this awakening is immediate. He waits for the people to turn their attention toward Him, and the very moment the speech concludes, a divine cloud appears

The people then turn to face the wilderness. The primary approach among commentators is that this is a physical action. The Israelites step out of their tents [העמק דבר] and look ahead toward the heart of the desert, focusing on the pillar of cloud that guides their journey [ספורנו, ביאור יש״ר, קאסוטו]. Alternatively, they look toward Moses' tent, which is situated outside the camp However, this shift in direction also carries a profound spiritual meaning. Up until this point, the Israelites are terrified of the barren wasteland, complaining bitterly and longing to return to Egypt. Facing the desert now symbolizes a change of heart. It represents their repentance and their newfound willingness to follow God into the unknown

As a result of this internal and external shift, the people experience a unique, tangible revelation of the Divine Presence This likely takes the form of fire visible within the pillar of cloud. The striking visual makes God's presence undeniably real to them, highlighting His fatherly desire to care for their needs [קאסוטו]. The appearance of His glory serves as a sign of affection, confirming that their repentance is accepted [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, it proves the truth of the prophetic message beyond any doubt. By witnessing this physical manifestation, the Israelites strengthen their faith in God's leadership, fully preparing them to receive the Torah with absolute certainty
