The journey through the desert was marked by severe failures, bringing the Israelites to the brink of total destruction. Yet, rather than wiping them out, God chose a path of deep mercy and deliberate preparation. Despite the heavy sins of the generation in the wilderness, which made them fully deserving of complete ruin, God extended profound compassion and mercy [מצודת ציון, מנחת שי, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He held back from destroying the nation entirely, sparing them from the harsh punishment they had earned [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their survival, however, was not simply a matter of avoiding punishment. It was a calculated process of education and preservation for the future.

Two complementary approaches explain why the nation received this specific compassion. The first focuses on the physical continuity of the people. God refrained from wiping them out in order to keep their children alive, ensuring that the next generation would survive to eventually enter the Land of Israel [רד״ק].

A second approach explores the spiritual and educational purpose of their prolonged stay in the desert. True compassion is often extended toward something that still holds potential and purpose. Because the root of the Israelites' sins was a fundamental lack of faith, God understood that delaying their journey and keeping them in the wilderness for forty years would serve a vital need. It allowed them to directly witness His continuous miracles and daily care. The ultimate goal of keeping them alive in the desert was to grant the nation the time they needed to truly know God and develop complete faith in Him [מלבי״ם].
