יחזקאל, פרק כ״א, פסוק ל״ה

Ezekiel 21:35Sefaria

The doom of the enemy nation is firmly sealed, as the sword of destruction will not rest until it strikes them in their very own homeland. The call for the sword to return to its sheath can be understood as a strict sequence of divine justice. According to this view, the enemy must wait until the sword currently striking Israel finishes its task. Only after Israel's punishment is complete will that same weapon turn to exact vengeance upon the enemy [רש״י]. Alternatively, the idea of returning the sword to its sheath serves as a rhetorical challenge. It is impossible to imagine that God would simply put the weapon away after it strikes Israel; rather, the sword will refuse to rest until it has fully judged the enemy nation as well [רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. A third perspective views this as a direct command to halt the attack. Because the enemy's vision of ultimate victory is nothing but an illusion, their killing spree will abruptly end, forcing the attackers to retreat to their own land [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ].

Ultimately, the final judgment will take place directly within the homeland of the Ammonites. God will direct the sword of the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, to execute justice upon them within their own borders [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. This specific location for their punishment is highly intentional. The enemy will be struck down precisely in the place where they felt the most secure, shattering their mistaken belief that the devastation would never reach their doorstep. Trapped in their own land, they will face their judgment with no opportunity to escape to foreign territories [רד״ק].
