פרשת ויצא

Genesis 30:19Sefaria

וַתַּ֤הַר עוֹד֙ לֵאָ֔ה וַתֵּ֥לֶד בֵּן־שִׁשִּׁ֖י לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃

The arrival of a sixth son represents a profound turning point in the marriage of Jacob and Leah, merging physical renewal with a deep spiritual destiny. Jacob realized that Leah was still capable of bearing children. Having previously assumed she could no longer conceive, this renewed fertility ensured that he continued to visit her tent and remain with her [ביאור יש״ר].

Beyond a simple numerical count, the birth of a sixth son carries a hidden spiritual weight. The number six hints at the sixth day of the month of Sivan, the future date when God would give the Torah. The newborn, Zebulun, is destined to become the financial provider for his brother Issachar, who will dedicate his life to studying the Torah. By supporting his brother, Zebulun acts as a gracious host who sustains the study of God's law [אלשיך].

This unique destiny of hosting the Torah directly mirrors Leah's deepest hope for a permanent connection with her husband. The concept behind Zebulun's name is tied to the heavenly realm from which Jacob drew down the Divine Presence. Leah prays that just as her new son will one day host the Torah and invite the Divine Presence, his birth will inspire Jacob to make his primary home with her, bringing that same holiness into her tent. This essential bond between Jacob and Leah ultimately stands the test of time, culminating in Leah, rather than Rachel, earning the eternal right to be buried alongside Jacob in the Cave of Machpelah [אלשיך].
