Upon returning from Egypt, the brothers must recount their tense encounter with the foreign ruler to their father, Jacob. However, their account is not a simple retelling of facts. Instead, it is a carefully censored and softened version of events designed to protect their father from the terrifying reality of their situation.

They begin by explaining that the ruler spoke to them with intense severity. The way they describe his speech points to harsh and forceful language, contrasting sharply with gentle communication. This manner of speaking is tied to the concept of absolute power, as a leader naturally addresses others with firm authority and unwavering strength [תורה תמימה על התורה].

Continuing their report, the brothers state that the ruler accused them of being spies [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Yet, their careful phrasing reveals a deliberate attempt to downplay the severe danger they faced. They frame the encounter as though the ruler merely harbored a general suspicion about their motives. In truth, the ruler had declared with absolute certainty that they were spies, and his demand that they bring Benjamin was presented as the only way to save themselves from certain death [מלבי״ם].

Furthermore, the brothers selectively omit details from their story. They only mention the accusation of espionage, leaving out an additional suspicion the ruler had raised during their meeting. This omission is practical, as the ruler ultimately focused his attention and based his final demands entirely on the charge of spying [העמק דבר].
