שמואל ב, פרק ט״ו, פסוק כ״ז

II Samuel 15:27Sefaria

Fleeing from Absalom, David makes strategic moves to secure his survival by establishing a covert communication network within Jerusalem and reorganizing the priestly leadership. Although both Zadok and Abiathar are present, David directs his instructions exclusively to Zadok. This targeted focus reflects Zadok's recent appointment as High Priest, making him the appropriate recipient of David's orders [מצודת דוד]. Beyond the administrative shift, this change carries deep spiritual significance. Abiathar had previously attempted to seek guidance from God through the Urim and Thummim but received no answer, effectively marking his removal from the High Priesthood. In contrast, Zadok successfully inquired and received a response, demonstrating that God's presence now rested upon him [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. By addressing Zadok again, David also creates a clear separation between his previous command to return the Ark of the Covenant and his new directive for the priests to return and establish an espionage ring [אברבנאל].

David questions Zadok about what he sees, a concept interpreted in several ways. The primary approach among commentators views this as a matter of practical understanding and judgment. David is essentially asking if Zadok comprehends the strategy and agrees with his advice [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because Zadok clearly grasps the direction the crisis is taking, he is the ideal candidate to return to the city, monitor the unfolding events, and make decisions based on new developments [רלב״ג]. Another approach understands this sight as true prophetic vision. David refers to Zadok as a seer because the Holy Spirit rests upon him, allowing him to witness God's answer through the Urim and Thummim [רד״ק, אלשיך]. According to this view, Zadok actually saw the illuminated letters form the command to return to the city in peace, which led David to issue the order [מלבי״ם]. A third perspective suggests David is offering Zadok a tactical cover story. By framing the return to Jerusalem as an independent decision that Zadok personally saw fit to make, rather than a direct order from the fleeing king, Zadok can safely reenter the city without arousing Absalom's suspicion [מלבי״ם].

In instructing the priests to return peacefully, David acknowledges their loyalty but emphasizes that their true place remains in Jerusalem with the Ark [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because God's presence is with him, Zadok can return with confidence, free from the fear of Absalom [אלשיך]. To ensure a steady flow of information, their sons, Ahimaaz and Jonathan, are assigned to act as undercover agents. Stationed near the royal palace, they will gather critical intelligence on Absalom's strategies and discreetly pass it to David, enabling him to plan his next moves and evade capture [רש״י, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל, רד״ק]. These two specific sons are chosen from among all the priestly families because they are the wisest and most capable individuals for such a highly sensitive and complex mission [רלב״ג].
