Leviticus 13:19Sefaria

When human skin suffers an injury such as a boil, the healing process permanently alters its original nature. Rather than returning to its previous state, the damaged area develops scar-like tissue that behaves differently under the laws of purity and impurity compared to healthy skin [ספורנו]. The primary approach among commentators is that the sequence of events is crucial: first, the boil erupts and mostly heals, and only then does a new affliction emerge in that exact spot However, a minority view suggests the opposite, proposing that the affliction was already present and the boil formed over it [מלבי״ם]. In either scenario, the skin at the site of the injury has not yet fully mended [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Upon this sensitive, healing area, two distinct types of marks might appear. The first is a swelling that is purely white, completely free of any other shades [תורה תמימה]. The second is a bright spot with a reddish-white appearance. This second type is not a solid white, but rather a blend of white and red To illustrate this mixed appearance, some describe it as looking like a cup of milk with drops of blood falling into it [בכור שור], or like wine diluted with water [תורה תמימה].

The exact nature of this red tint is a matter of discussion. One perspective suggests it describes an intense, extreme, and deep red Conversely, another approach argues that it implies a weakened, diluted color, appearing sparsely scattered across the spot like watered-down wine

Although a purely white color is associated with the swelling and the mixed color is associated with the bright spot, these combinations are not exclusive. Any of these afflictions result in a state of impurity, regardless of whether they are purely white or mixed with red The mixed reddish color is specifically mentioned in the context of a boil simply because it naturally occurs more frequently on healing skin than on undamaged skin

Finally, the affected individual must present themselves to the priest. The specific phrasing of this requirement highlights that the person must actively bring themselves forward to be seen, allowing the priest to examine the new mark and officially determine its status [ברכת אשר].
