פרשת בהעלותך

Numbers 11:14Sefaria

The journey through the desert brings the leadership of Moses to a breaking point, forcing him to recognize the strict limits of what a single human being can endure. Rather than expressing random frustration or refusing to fulfill God's command, Moses arrives at a firm, realistic conclusion. He realizes that the weight of guiding an entire nation is simply too heavy for one person to bear [אור החיים]. This burden has recently become even more overwhelming because the officers and leaders who previously assisted him died in the fire that burned through the camp, leaving him to face the people entirely alone [חזקוני].

The core of his struggle lies in the emotional and psychological demands of the Israelites. Moses feels that while he is fully capable of receiving the Torah and teaching it, he lacks the specific psychological influence required to shape the nation's character and manage their intense emotions [רש ר הירש]. He views himself more as a caretaker than a biological father. A father instinctively knows how to soothe his own child, but Moses struggles to contain the restless, ever-changing moods of a massive population and cannot easily quiet their minds [העמק דבר].

Asking to share this leadership is not based on a false hope that a council of elders will suddenly be able to provide the meat the people are demanding, as they have no way to obtain it. Moses is also well aware that the Israelites will continue to direct their primary complaints at him, since he is the one who led them out of Egypt. Instead, the purpose of bringing in the elders is both practical and psychological. A broader team of leaders can help calm tempers, speak directly to the hearts of the people, and restrain wild behavior during moments of crisis [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך, ביאור יש״ר]. Furthermore, sharing these responsibilities allows the nation to develop trust in these new leaders [ספורנו]. Once the people see the elders receive the spirit of prophecy, they will accept their authority and begin directing some of their demands to them, effectively spreading out the intense pressure that currently rests on Moses alone [רמב״ן, הטור הארוך].
