Numbers 11:30Sefaria

After the divine spirit rested upon the seventy elders at the Tabernacle, the spiritual leadership returned to the people just moments before disaster struck. Moses left the sacred grounds of the Tabernacle, which was situated outside the main Israelite encampment, and went back indoors Although the return is described as a singular action, each of the elders, alongside Moses, actually went back to his own private tent within his respective tribe Moses deliberately walked with the elders to honor them, acting as their personal escort This shared journey symbolized the fulfillment of God's promise that these elders would now carry the burden of the nation alongside Moses, and it was through their merit that the requested meat would be provided [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that their gathering carried a deeper spiritual weight, hinting at the end of life. The additional spirit the elders received elevated them to a level where they experienced their ultimate reward in this world, and it was through their profound merit that the quail finally arrived [שפתי כהן].

A central question arises regarding why Moses and the elders hurried to shut themselves inside their tents at this exact moment. The primary approach among commentators is that they went indoors to seek protection from the impending disaster that would accompany the arrival of the quail. God does not unleash punishment upon the general public until the righteous are safely secured indoors The divine anger at that time was so intense that a destructive force was permitted to strike without distinguishing between the righteous and the wicked. Therefore, the elders had to hide in their homes, much like Noah in the ark. While Moses himself did not require this protection, he went into his tent specifically to set an example so the elders would do the same [משכיל לדוד].

Other perspectives view this retreat into the tents as an educational measure and a silent rebuke to the nation. Moses and the elders locked themselves away to avoid witnessing the arrival of the quail, which represented the people's corrupt and improper desires. The leadership hoped that when the Israelites saw their spiritual guides distancing themselves from the meat, they would realize their error and regret their demands. Tragically, the people ignored this silent message and eagerly rushed out to gather the birds [צרור המור]. Alternatively, Moses and the elders may have gone out into the camp to actively confront the Israelites, demanding they abandon their harmful desires. However, this direct intervention proved ineffective, as the divine decree was already sealed and the impending punishment could no longer be stopped [העמק דבר].
