חֵ֥לֶם חֲזֵ֖ית וִֽידַחֲלִנַּ֑נִי וְהַרְהֹרִין֙ עַֽל־מִשְׁכְּבִ֔י וְחֶזְוֵ֥י רֵאשִׁ֖י יְבַהֲלֻנַּֽנִי׃

A sudden disruption shatters a king's profound peace of mind. Out of nowhere, an unusual nighttime experience strikes against a calm background, leaving him completely enveloped in terror and anxiety [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The account of this event unfolds in three distinct parts—a dream, thoughts, and visions—which raises a question of whether this was a single nightmare or a growing wave of fear.

The primary approach among commentators is that these elements describe one unified event. The king experienced a deeply threatening and frightening dream [רש״י, אבן עזרא]. The thoughts mentioned are simply the inner workings of the heart during sleep, as dreams naturally grow from one's thoughts [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. The visions refer to the vivid sights formed in the mind. According to this perspective, repeating the description of the dream and the resulting fear three times is a poetic tool used to capture the sheer intensity and overwhelming power of the nightmare [מצודת דוד].

Alternatively, this experience was not confined to sleep but was a gradual development where fear spilled over into reality. The terror began with a frightening dream, yet waking up provided no relief. Instead, the king continued to be haunted by terrifying ideas and awful sights, remaining entirely consumed by panic even while lying wide awake in his bed [מלבי״ם, יוסף אבן יחיא].

Another layer of meaning focuses on the mental struggle to decode the dream. Often, a scary dream can carry a positive message, meaning the frightening images alone do not guarantee a bad future. However, in this case, the king suffered a twofold collapse. The initial panic came from the threatening images within the dream itself. A second, much deeper fear took hold as he lay in bed thinking about what the dream might mean. As his mind analyzed the visions, he realized that their hidden message carried a very real and actual threat. It was this clear, intellectual understanding of the danger that ultimately magnified his terror [אלשיך].
