פרשת ויצא

Genesis 30:10Sefaria

וַתֵּ֗לֶד זִלְפָּ֛ה שִׁפְחַ֥ת לֵאָ֖ה לְיַעֲקֹ֥ב בֵּֽן׃

The account of Zilpah giving birth to her son unfolds with a subtle departure from the usual pattern of childbirth in the family. While the pregnancies of the other mothers and maidservants are noted before their children are born, Zilpah's pregnancy goes entirely unmentioned.

The omission of the pregnancy phase points directly to Zilpah's extreme youth. She was the youngest of the maidservants, practically a child, and because of her physical immaturity, her pregnancy was not noticeable to those around her [רש״י].

This detail about her young age sheds light on a much earlier event: the night Jacob was deceived by Laban. At that time, the standard custom was to assign the older maidservant to the older daughter and the younger maidservant to the younger daughter. Laban, however, deliberately broke this convention. He gave Zilpah, the youngest maidservant, to his older daughter Leah.

This calculated move was a crucial part of Laban's plot to trick Jacob into believing he was marrying Rachel. By pairing the young maidservant with the bride, Laban created the illusion that the bride herself was the younger sister. Had he followed custom and presented the older maidservant, Jacob would have instantly realized that the older sister, Leah, was the one being brought to him [רש״י, גור אריה].
