פרשת ויצא

Genesis 30:29Sefaria

Standing before his father-in-law, Jacob lays the groundwork to finally demand his wages. He presents a sharp summary of his deep dedication and the massive economic success he has brought to Laban's household. Jacob seeks fair compensation not as a favor, but as an absolute right earned through his exceptional labor and the divine blessing that accompanied him.

Jacob reminds Laban that his work was performed with complete faithfulness, requiring every ounce of his strength, knowledge, and effort [רמב״ן, רד״ק, ספורנו]. His toil went far beyond the duties of a typical hired hand, as he labored day and night in harsh conditions [מלבי״ם]. Until this point, Jacob had worked solely to earn his wives, receiving no actual wages or customary dowry. Now, with a large family of his own to support, he asserts his full right to demand real compensation for his efforts [חזקוני, ביאור יש״ר, בכור שור]. Furthermore, Jacob makes it clear that Laban's sudden wealth should not be attributed to blind luck or random chance, but strictly to the flawless and professional nature of Jacob's work [ספורנו].

Turning to the livestock, Jacob challenges Laban to reflect on the state of the animals. The primary approach among commentators is that Jacob is highlighting the tiny number of sheep Laban possessed at the very beginning. By asking Laban to recall that exact, meager amount, Jacob emphasizes the immense growth and the blessing from God that took hold of the herds once they were under his care [רש״י, רמב״ן, רד״ק, מזרחי, שפתי חכמים, גור אריה]. Alternatively, another perspective suggests Jacob is focusing on what the flock ultimately became, pointing out how greatly it prospered during his tenure [ביאור יש״ר].

Beyond the sheer quantity of the animals, commentators note the extraordinary quality of Jacob's care. He treated Laban's livestock as if it were his own private property [מלבי״ם], carefully healing the sick animals and bandaging those that were injured [ספורנו]. This level of dedication stemmed from a profound kindness and mercy toward the animals that exceeded ordinary human behavior. Ultimately, it was this very compassion that caused the flock to thrive, grow, and multiply so abundantly [העמק דבר].
