Genesis 30:39Sefaria

Jacob employs a remarkable blend of natural strategy and divine intervention to secure his rightful wages against constant deceit. By utilizing visual stimuli during the mating season, he successfully influences the appearance of the newly born flocks.

During the mating season, both the males and females were driven to mate together [רד״ק]. Jacob placed the flocks directly facing the peeled sticks he had prepared [רש״י, רד״ק, ביאור יש״ר, שטיינזלץ], though some suggest the reaction was simply a direct result of the sticks being present [אבן עזרא, חזקוני]. The primary approach among commentators is that the striking appearance of the exposed wood was powerfully etched into the females' imagination. Because the power of imagination resides in the brain, where the physical formation of life begins, the offspring developed to match the images fixed in the mothers' minds A contrasting perspective suggests that the sticks did not directly alter the embryos. Instead, the visual stimulus naturally drew the females to mate specifically with males that shared the colors of the sticks, thereby producing offspring that resembled their fathers [שד״ל].

This calculated strategy raises a question about why Jacob resorted to such tactics. Because Laban acted with persistent deceit, repeatedly changing the terms of compensation, Jacob needed a way to claim his rightful earnings. He carefully avoided taking from Laban's existing flocks to prevent any hint of theft. Instead, he used the sticks to ensure his own designated sheep would yield the exact colors agreed upon for his wages Furthermore, while Jacob's actions appear entirely bound by the laws of nature, they were actually a miracle from God concealed within a natural process. This mirrors the way prophets often performed miracles through physical objects In certain instances, the divine intervention was so profound that the drinking water alone caused the females to conceive, without any mating taking place at all [חומש קה״ת].

The events summarize a period spanning multiple mating seasons. During this time, the flocks gave birth to various colors in response to Laban's constantly shifting conditions [הכתב והקבלה]. Once Jacob had accumulated enough sheep with the required markings, he separated them. By placing these specifically colored sheep in front of the rest of the flock during mating, he no longer needed to rely on the sticks The resulting offspring fell into specific visual categories. Some were born with distinct spots and color variations on their ankles, exactly where animals are typically bound Others fell under a broader category that does not point to one specific mark, but rather serves as a general description for various patched and speckled patterns
