Genesis 30:42Sefaria

Jacob implemented a calculated breeding strategy to ensure the strongest animals joined his own flock while the weaker ones remained with his father-in-law, Laban. Laban had constantly deceived Jacob, repeatedly changing his wages and deliberately removing the male goats to make Jacob's task nearly impossible. In response, Jacob used a sophisticated method to outmaneuver this continuous trickery.

The primary approach among commentators is that the weaker animals in the flock were simply exhausted and lacked the physical strength to conceive. However, others explain that these were the late-mating sheep, whose young were born during the autumn Another perspective suggests they were physically weighed down by heavy coats of wool and thick skin, which diminished their desire to mate In stark contrast, the prime animals were healthy, early to conceive, and possessed vital energy firmly bound within their bodies

When it was time for the weaker or late-mating sheep to breed, Jacob deliberately withheld the peeled wooden rods from the water troughs. There were several reasons for this choice. On a practical level, having already secured a generation of strong animals, he had no interest in acquiring inferior sheep and chose not to waste his effort on them Strategically, he needed to camouflage his methods from Laban and the other shepherds. By only using the rods during specific seasons, he avoided drawing attention and prevented any accusations of witchcraft or cheating Jacob also knew Laban’s schedule for inspecting the herds and purposely kept the rods out of sight during those visits [רד״ק]. Furthermore, he intentionally left a portion of the flock for Laban to prevent his father-in-law from becoming enraged by losing everything [בכור שור].

While the use of the peeled branches appeared to be a natural breeding technique, many view it as a direct miracle and assistance from God. The rods served merely as a physical channel to bring about the miracle, much like the staff used by Moses. Some even note that an angel actively intervened, guiding the correct male goats to Jacob's flock Still, another viewpoint maintains that the entire process was a completely natural phenomenon [הטור הארוך]. Despite the success of his plan, Jacob's actions are not without critique. Because his strategy carried the appearance of deceiving Laban, it created a lasting consequence; in the future, Jacob's descendants would face times of weakness and suffer from famine
