שמואל ב, פרק ט״ו, פסוק ל״ד

II Samuel 15:34Sefaria

In the midst of a bitter rebellion, David formulates a brilliant political and psychological strategy to save his life and his kingdom. He sends his loyal friend Hushai back to Jerusalem to act as a double agent within the newly formed royal court of his rebellious son, Absalom. The primary goal is for Hushai to gain Absalom's trust and sabotage the deadly advice of Ahithophel from the inside.

Hushai approaches the new ruler with a clear and simple pledge of loyalty. He promises to serve Absalom moving forward just as faithfully as he served David in the past [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד]. Commentators reveal multiple layers of persuasion in this declaration. On a practical level, Hushai positions himself as a realistic government official. Knowing that Absalom needs to establish his new administration, Hushai assumes the new king will gladly welcome experienced ministers from the previous government. The declaration of loyalty is designed to guarantee his entry into the inner circle of advisors [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To avoid any suspicion, Hushai delivers a carefully crafted dual message. He subtly suggests that if David still desires his son's success, serving Absalom is essentially an extension of serving David. However, even if the situation has entirely fractured and David has become an enemy, Hushai declares his allegiance to the new king, recognizing that God and the masses have clearly chosen Absalom [אלשיך].

On a deeper strategic level, Absalom faces a critical choice. He must decide whether to force his father into a peaceful, honorable retirement or execute him to prevent a counter-uprising. Ahithophel, who held a deep grudge against David following the events with Bathsheba, aggressively pushes for execution. Hushai arrives under God's guidance, precisely after David prays for Him to ruin Ahithophel's plans. By presenting himself as someone who cares deeply for both father and son, Hushai aims to convince Absalom that a peaceful transition of power is the wisest path. He suggests a scenario where David simply retires due to his age, allowing Hushai to serve the new king while maintaining respect for the former one. Steering Absalom toward a peaceful resolution naturally neutralizes Ahithophel's murderous plot [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, by securing absolute trust and a position as a confidant, Hushai ensures he is perfectly placed to dismantle Ahithophel's influence and protect David [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
