Judges 11:39Sefaria

The tragic saga of Jephthah’s vow reaches its devastating climax as his daughter returns from her requested two-month period of mourning. With her time of separation concluded, her father proceeds to fulfill the heavy promise he made to God.

The exact nature of how this vow is carried out is a subject of profound debate. One approach, drawing from the early Sages, suggests a literal and brutal fulfillment. According to this view, Jephthah actually sacrifices his daughter as a burnt offering, and she dies a young virgin Alternatively, a more refined perspective argues that the vow is fulfilled through absolute isolation rather than death. In this scenario, Jephthah builds a secluded home for his daughter, removing her entirely from human society and worldly affairs so she can be dedicated exclusively to serving God She remains celibate and separated from men until her dying day, a tragic fate her father mistakenly believes is commanded by God

Following these events, a permanent statute is established in Israel [מצודת ציון]. Many understand this as the beginning of a fixed tradition, where the young women of Israel would journey each year to visit her or commemorate her fate However, a sharper perspective views this statute as a public decree for all future generations, serving as a strict warning against ever repeating such a horrific act.

Ultimately, this entire tragedy is born from a clash of egos. The vow could have been easily annulled if not for the pride of the leaders involved. If Jephthah had swallowed his pride and sought out Phinehas, or if Phinehas had set aside his high status to visit Jephthah, the vow could have been dissolved and the young woman saved. Because both men stubbornly clung to their honor, the daughter is lost. Consequently, both leaders face severe punishment. The Divine Presence departs from Phinehas, and Jephthah is struck with a gruesome disease causing his limbs to fall off [רש״י].
