Leviticus 13:41Sefaria

Natural hair loss on the head is completely distinct from spiritual afflictions, leaving a person entirely pure. Biblical law carefully defines the physical boundaries of different types of baldness. Frontal baldness begins at the highest point of the crown and slopes downward toward the face [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. This specific area is not limited strictly to the forehead but expands outward to include the temples on both sides of the head Because the receding hairline reaches up to the crown, it creates the appearance of a noticeably high and prominent forehead This condition is a completely natural biological process, typical for men, whereas women generally do not experience this pattern of hair loss due to their natural physical moisture [אבן עזרא].

Because this hair loss is natural, the individual remains completely pure [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Even if the skin in this area undergoes slight visual changes, there is no need for quarantine, and the presence of yellow hair does not indicate impurity [רד״צ הופמן]. Although natural baldness at both the front and the back of the head shares this pure status, Biblical law treats them as two completely separate zones. Practically, this means that a blemish on the front cannot combine with a blemish on the back to meet the minimum size required for impurity, nor can an affliction spread across the boundary from one zone to the other

Beyond the physical laws, the division between the front and back of the head carries deep conceptual meaning. Afflictions on the head generally reflect a disruption in a person's thoughts and beliefs. The front of the brain is associated with intellectual investigation, while the back represents absolute faith. Therefore, baldness at the front of the head symbolizes a spiritual flaw stemming from misguided philosophical inquiry, whereas baldness at the back points to a fundamental lack of faith—a problem considered more severe and widespread [העמק דבר]. From another perspective, hair at the front of the head is spiritually linked to strict justice and anger. Consequently, losing hair in this area is viewed as an act of divine kindness, symbolizing that God is removing harsh judgments from the individual and forgiving the person's sins [שפתי כהן].
