פרשת צו

Leviticus 8:24Sefaria

The dedication ceremony for the priesthood involves precise physical actions that carry deep symbolic meaning. These actions mark the transition of the priests into holy service while also providing them with spiritual protection. As the process unfolds, Moses brings Aaron's sons forward. Aaron himself does not need to be brought forward at this stage; following his own anointing, he has already been standing close to Moses the entire time [רד צ הופמן].

The central act of this process involves placing blood on three specific body parts of the priests. This careful selection carries a clear conceptual message [אם למקרא]. First, blood is placed on the lower part of the ear. This shows that the priests are now free men, released from physical servitude and secular pursuits. It stands in direct contrast to the law of a slave, whose ear is pierced as a sign of permanent servitude. Next, blood is placed on the thumb to dedicate their hands to the service and the handling of holy vessels. The thumb is chosen because it is the central digit; without it, the rest of the hand cannot function properly. This practice serves as a reversal of the ancient custom of cutting off the thumbs of enemies to destroy their ability to act. Finally, blood is placed on the big toe. This dedicates their steps as they enter the holy space, ensuring their walking is done in peace and for the sake of God. In biblical tradition, walking serves as a metaphor for proper behavior and good deeds.

The blood is specifically applied to the right side of these body parts. This is due to the inherent holiness and favored status of the right side, which is given priority over the left in both the Torah and mystical teachings [אם למקרא]. Beyond these symbolic meanings, an additional approach suggests that placing blood on these outer extremities provides a spiritual defense, ensuring that harmful forces and destructive angels cannot injure the priests [חומת אנך].

To conclude the process, Moses takes the remaining blood from the vessel and throws it around the altar [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Together, the application of blood on the priests and its sprinkling on the altar form a comprehensive, precise system required to complete the days of dedication [אדרת אליהו].
