פרשת תולדות

Genesis 26:11Sefaria

A sudden royal intervention can instantly transform a situation of mortal danger into one of absolute safety, clearly showing God's watchful care. After the truth about the couple's marriage is discovered, the king issues a public decree. This order is designed to warn the citizens and prevent collective guilt from falling upon the entire nation.

The primary approach among commentators is that the king's warning aimed to prevent any physical harm or malicious actions. This decree served a dual purpose. First, it protected the wife, as the public now knew she was a married woman rather than an available sister. Second, it protected the husband. There was a genuine fear that the local people might kill him to take his wife, or attack him out of sheer anger because he had deceived them [רד״ק, שד״ל, מלבי״ם]. Additionally, this royal protection was granted due to his prestigious status and the historic covenant the king had established with his father [ביאור יש״ר]. The warning was comprehensive, meaning that harming either the husband or the wife would trigger the punishment [שד״ל].

Offering a completely different perspective, another viewpoint interprets this decree as an expression of hidden hatred rather than a protective measure. In this light, the warning was intended to enforce a strict social and economic boycott. The king forbade his citizens from trading or interacting with the husband, using the excuse of keeping the public away from the wife, while his true goal was to inflict financial damage and isolation [העמק דבר].

The severity of the punishment outlined in the decree implies a twofold consequence: death at the hands of Heaven and execution by human authorities. The king's order was unusually strict, demanding the death penalty even for minor physical contact. Under standard Noahide laws concerning a married woman, such a light offense would not normally result in death [אור החיים]. Ultimately, these dramatic events serve as the direct fulfillment of God's earlier promise to remain with him. Rather than being punished for concealing the truth of his marriage, he was shielded by God, ensuring complete security for both him and his wife [מלבי״ם, ביאור יש״ר].
