II Samuel 15:25Sefaria

As King David flees Jerusalem, the priests bring the Ark of the Covenant—containing both the whole and broken Tablets—hoping its sacred presence will protect the king during his escape. However, David firmly instructs Zadok the Priest to take it back. His refusal stems primarily from a deep respect for the Ark. He believes it is highly inappropriate for the Ark to be dragged around and forced to wander with him in exile. Furthermore, David is acutely aware of history and fears divine punishment. He recalls the tragic events from the time of Eli the Priest, when the Ark was taken to the battlefield without God's explicit command, ending in utter disaster [אברבנאל].

Beyond his concern for the Ark's honor, David's response reveals his absolute surrender to the will of God. He reasons that if he still finds favor in God's eyes, God will naturally bring him back to Jerusalem to see the Ark again. Conversely, if God no longer wants him as king, taking the physical Ark along will not help or change the divine decree. He understands that no one can force God's hand or manipulate His will simply by carrying the Ark into exile [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם].

Despite his profound submission, David holds onto the hope that God will safely return him to the city to see the Ark once more This desire extends far beyond merely looking at a physical object; it carries a deep spiritual longing for restored love and favor. In the midst of his distress, David feels distant and punished, like a man whose enemy refuses to even look at him. He prays that God will draw him close once again and allow him to serve before Him [רד״ק]. Ultimately, David yearns not only to reunite with the Ark itself but also to see the sanctuary and dwelling place where it permanently rests
