I Kings 20:15Sefaria

The preparation for the upcoming battle against the Aramean army reveals a striking contrast: a remarkably small Israelite military force paired with a rare moment of faith from a traditionally wicked king. As the forces are gathered and tallied for the impending clash [שטיינזלץ], a specific battle formation is established. The main body of the army marches out behind the young provincial leaders, who take the front lines exactly as God had instructed [מצודת דוד].

The total number of these Israelite fighters is notably small, numbering only seven thousand. Commentators offer two distinct ways to understand this limited force. From a practical standpoint, this number might represent all the remaining men of war available [מצודת דוד]. Alternatively, it could simply reflect all the combat-ready men present in Samaria at that time; since it was not a massive city, these were the only soldiers who went out to fight [רלב״ג], [שטיינזלץ].

However, the primary approach among commentators views this number through a spiritual lens. This perspective identifies the fighters as an elite group of righteous individuals—specifically, the seven thousand men who had never bowed in worship to the idol Baal [רש״י], [מצודת דוד], [אברבנאל]. According to this view, King Ahab, despite his usual wickedness, chose to believe the prophet's message. Understanding that a profound miracle from God could only be brought about through His most loyal servants, the king deliberately gathered these specific righteous men for the battle. Recognizing his own low spiritual standing, Ahab even hesitated and questioned who should initiate the fight, fearing that God would not want a wicked man to lead the charge [אברבנאל].

Behind the surprising success of such a small force lay a twofold divine plan. First, God intended to prove to the Israelites that, according to His will, a mere handful of soldiers can overcome a massive enemy horde. Second, God specifically orchestrated the outbreak of the war and the resulting crushing victory to ignite a deep, intense hatred from Aram toward Israel. This overwhelming animosity was designed to ultimately drive the Arameans' fierce desire for revenge against the Israelite king [אברבנאל].
