ירמיהו, פרק ל״א, פסוק כ״ה

Jeremiah 31:25Sefaria

כִּ֥י הִרְוֵ֖יתִי נֶ֣פֶשׁ עֲיֵפָ֑ה וְכׇל־נֶ֥פֶשׁ דָּאֲבָ֖ה מִלֵּֽאתִי׃

A divine promise of comfort and abundance is granted to those who have endured deep sorrow, lack, and hardship. God promises to fully satisfy every physical and emotional need, transforming suffering into profound well-being and a sense of complete fullness.

The primary approach among commentators is that the weariness experienced by the people represents an intense thirst and dryness. [רד״ק] views this metaphorically, explaining that the Israelites became exhausted and parched during their long years in exile. Now, God promises to quench their thirst from the springs of salvation. Taking a different approach, [מלבי״ם] understands this weariness in a literal sense, describing an exhaustion born from relentless hard labor.

Beyond physical exhaustion, the people suffered from deep sadness, pain, and anxiety. [רד״ק] traces this emotional burden to the constant worries and grief caused by the many troubles of exile. Conversely, [מלבי״ם] focuses on their material struggles, suggesting that their sorrow came directly from lacking basic life necessities.

In response to these layers of distress, God steps in to replenish what was lost. The commentators agree that He will fill the lacking soul with everything good, completely replacing their sadness with joy. Building on this, [מלבי״ם] introduces a social and moral dimension to the divine promise. He explains that once God provides for everyone's needs, the desperation that drives people to steal and exploit others will disappear. Consequently, the entire society will be able to live together in true justice and honesty.
