Ezekiel 20:43Sefaria

Returning to a place of safety and blessing does not erase the memory of past mistakes. Rather, it provides the exact environment needed for a true spiritual awakening and deep soul-searching. As the people settle back into the Land of Israel [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ], they will experience a profound shift in perspective. A renewed heart will allow them to examine their history on two distinct levels. First, they will reflect on their ingrained habits and internal character flaws. Second, they will confront the actual physical deeds that grew out of those negative traits

Standing in a new, positive reality while remembering these past failures brings about a deep recognition of God's kindness. The people will realize that God acted for the sake of His great name, choosing not to destroy them even though their actions warranted it. Experiencing this goodness and grace is exactly what will lead them to truly know God [מלבי״ם].

The sharp contrast between their past sins and God's present kindness triggers a complex emotional reaction. Some explain this response as a heavy internal struggle marked by sighing and distress [רש״י], accompanied by intense feelings of regret, shame, and self-contempt for how they previously lived [מלבי״ם, שטיינזלץ]. Another approach suggests a feeling of being completely cut down. According to this view, their self-reflection will be so piercing that the people will judge themselves with extreme severity, feeling that they truly deserved to be entirely wiped from the world for the evils they committed
