וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יִפְתָּח֙ לְזִקְנֵ֣י גִלְעָ֔ד הֲלֹ֤א אַתֶּם֙ שְׂנֵאתֶ֣ם אוֹתִ֔י וַתְּגָרְשׁ֖וּנִי מִבֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑י וּמַדּ֜וּעַ בָּאתֶ֤ם אֵלַי֙ עַ֔תָּה כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר צַ֥ר לָכֶֽם׃

A tense confrontation unfolds as the nation's leaders approach a man they once rejected, desperate for his military leadership in the face of impending war. Rather than eagerly accepting their plea, he forces them to confront their own hypocrisy and the purely selfish motives driving their request. He makes it clear that there is no bond of affection between them, questioning why they seek him out only now after treating him like an outcast in the past [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A central issue in this confrontation is his accusation that these very leaders drove him away from his family home. Since it was actually his brothers who expelled him, commentators offer different explanations for why the elders are blamed. One perspective suggests that his brothers were simply part of this visiting delegation of elders [אברבנאל]. Alternatively, even if his brothers were absent, the elders bear direct responsibility because they actively assisted in the expulsion [מצודת דוד]. At the very least, by standing idly by and failing to protest the injustice, the leaders became full partners in the wrongdoing [אברבנאל]. He reminds them that they drove him away simply because they viewed him as a lowly and despised individual at the time [מלבי״ם].

He then sharply criticizes the timing of their visit, pointing out that they only come to him in a moment of distress. He completely rejects any notion that their current plea stems from a newfound respect or affection. Had they genuinely regretted their past cruelty, they would have sought his forgiveness during times of peace, and he would have gladly pardoned them. Waiting until a severe crisis hits only proves that their old hostility remains intact, and their visit is driven entirely by desperate necessity [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, he holds up a mirror to their behavior, challenging the expectation that he should freely rush to their aid as if they share a bond of love, when it is painfully obvious that only selfish panic brought them to his door [מלבי״ם].
