Judges 11:9Sefaria

A tense negotiation unfolds between a banished warrior and the desperate leaders who once cast him out. Jephthah sets a firm condition for his return to the elders of Gilead, challenging the terms they have offered him. His response reveals a complex blend of sharp political strategy and a deep declaration of faith. The primary approach among commentators [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, אברבנאל] is that Jephthah criticizes the elders for offering him leadership only upon the condition that he wins the war. He makes it clear that their promise lacks genuine respect or sincere regret for his past exile, and that they are essentially treating him like a hired mercenary.

Jephthah points out the simple political reality of their offer. If he is defeated in battle, they certainly will not want him as their leader. On the other hand, if he emerges victorious, he will naturally become their head by right of conquest, regardless of the elders' wishes. Just as the people sought to crown Gideon after he saved them, a victorious Jephthah would hold the power [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. Because of this, Jephthah demands that his appointment take place immediately. If they are bringing him back to fight the Ammonites, they must accept his authority from this moment onward [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He insists on being named the head right away so that he can march into battle as the official leader and commander of the people, rather than as a private soldier [מלבי״ם]. This undeniable logic forces the elders to change their stance, and they agree to appoint him as their ruler before the battle even begins, committing to his leadership even if he ultimately fails to save them [אברבנאל].

Alongside this calculated political move, Jephthah reveals a profound perspective of faith. He openly declares that he does not rely on his own personal bravery or on the merit of the elders, who only sought him out in their time of distress. Instead, his trust rests entirely on the grace of God. He acknowledges that the enemy will be defeated solely through heavenly mercy, and it is only by the miracle of salvation coming through him that he will truly become their leader [נחל שורק].
