Leviticus 25:24Sefaria

וּבְכֹ֖ל אֶ֣רֶץ אֲחֻזַּתְכֶ֑ם גְּאֻלָּ֖ה תִּתְּנ֥וּ לָאָֽרֶץ׃ {ס}

Land ownership within the Land of Israel operates under a unique divine economic and spiritual order, fundamentally different from standard property rights. An ancestral heritage is never sold permanently but remains inherently tied to its original owner. This principle is maintained through the strict obligation to allow the redemption of sold property. The primary approach among commentators is that this concept serves as a general introduction to the specific laws of land redemption that follow [רד צ הופמן].

When a person sells his property, he or his close relatives retain the fundamental right to buy it back after two years, and the purchaser has no right to prevent this transaction In practice, selling land does not constitute an absolute transfer of ownership; rather, it functions similarly to a mortgage [חזקוני]. This clarification is essential, as one might mistakenly assume that because all land automatically reverts to its original owners during the Jubilee year, there is no option to redeem it earlier [פענח רזא]. This earlier redemption requires a monetary payment to the buyer, distinguishing it from the Jubilee return, which is completely free [שד״ל]. Conversely, another perspective suggests that this principle does not introduce the upcoming redemption laws but connects directly to the preceding laws of the Jubilee year According to this view, the directive to grant redemption is aimed at the Jubilee itself, mandating the unconditional, cost-free release and return of all lands to their original owners.

The act of redemption is defined as extracting and rescuing property from its current holder, mirroring the way God redeemed the Israelites from their oppressors Geographically, these laws of redemption and Jubilee apply exclusively within the borders of the Land of Israel and not in the diaspora [ספורנו]. However, the law encompasses all areas of the Israelites' heritage, including the territories located on the eastern side of the Jordan River Additionally, there is a specific commandment to redeem land that has been sold to a gentile, ensuring that a gentile does not work the sacred soil during the Sabbatical year [העמק דבר].

The inclusive nature of this law provides further legal expansions. While the primary focus is on agricultural fields, the right of relatives to redeem property extends to other assets, including houses within walled cities and a Hebrew slave Furthermore, stepping in to redeem a relative's property is not merely an optional choice but a binding obligation

On a spiritual level, the concept of land redemption serves as an allegory for the human condition and future salvation. The physical land symbolizes the material body, while redemption represents the spiritual illumination and vital connection that the soul provides [שפתי כהן]. The ancestral land also alludes to this physical, earthly world. When a person engages in mundane daily activities, such as eating or conducting business, with pure intentions for the sake of Heaven, they extract and redeem sparks of holiness from the material realm, thereby bringing redemption to the higher spiritual worlds Finally, the immediate transition from the concept of redemption to the mention of an impoverished brother contains a profound hint regarding the Messianic era. The ultimate, complete redemption of the land will occur specifically when the Israelites experience severe material poverty, a state of destitution that removes spiritual accusations against them and paves the way for their final salvation [פרדס יוסף].
