Exodus 28:27Sefaria

The High Priest's garments were meticulously designed to ensure every piece remained securely in place, allowing for comfortable and dignified service in the Tabernacle. To achieve this stability, two gold rings were incorporated into the design. These rings were positioned at the bottom edge of the shoulder straps, contrasting with the gold settings located at the top Specifically, they sat slightly above the belt, exactly at the seam where the shoulder straps attached to the belt and the main apron

The primary approach among commentators is that these rings were placed on the outer, visible side of the garment rather than the inner side touching the High Priest's body However, other perspectives suggest the rings were located on the inner edge of the straps [קאסוטו] or positioned on the back of the High Priest [שטיינזלץ, חזקוני].

The practical function of these rings was to serve as anchor points. A blue thread tied them to matching rings at the bottom of the breastplate. This connection tightly secured the breastplate to the apron, preventing it from detaching, swinging back and forth, or bumping against the High Priest's stomach while he worked. As a result, the breastplate rested perfectly and elegantly over his heart

Understanding this system of connections depends on the overall shape of the apron itself. Some describe it as a type of apron tied around the waist that hung downward, with straps extending upward to the shoulders [הדר זקנים]. An alternative view presents it as a short upper garment that covered the chest and back from the waist upward. This specific design would prevent excess weight on the High Priest's legs, maintain his freedom of movement during the service, and keep the shoulder straps from slipping off whenever he bent down [חזקוני].
