פרשת האזינו

Deuteronomy 32:33Sefaria

חֲמַ֥ת תַּנִּינִ֖ם יֵינָ֑ם וְרֹ֥אשׁ פְּתָנִ֖ים אַכְזָֽר׃

Imagery of poisoned wine and snake venom paints a vivid picture of deep moral corruption, extreme cruelty, and severe disaster. The deadly venom, whether understood simply as bitterness or as the concentrated poison stored within a snake's skull, serves as a powerful metaphor for wickedness and aggression [אבן עזרא, רלב"ג, דעת זקנים, בכור שור, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This cruelty goes beyond physical violence; it represents a state of total alienation and a complete lack of love for others [רש"ר הירש].

The primary approach among commentators is that the poisoned wine symbolizes a cup of disaster. This represents a harsh and fitting punishment reserved for the wicked, based on the strict measure of justice. It is kept ready and waiting until the moment God chooses to execute His judgment, forcing them to drink from it [רש"י, ספורנו, רשב"ם].

On another level, this toxic imagery captures the intense cruelty, malicious joy, and venom the Israelites will endure at the hands of other nations throughout their years of exile. These nations act as God's instruments of punishment, functioning as a ruthless enemy that inflicts suffering so immense that words can barely contain it [רש"י, שפתי חכמים, רש"ר הירש, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the harm inflicted upon the Israelites, the venom also symbolizes the profound internal moral decay within these nations themselves. Their very thoughts and worldviews are twisted and destructive [ביאור יש"ר]. This corruption seeps into their institutions; their legal system is deeply cruel, with judges treating the condemned as viciously as aggressively striking snakes [מלבי"ם]. Furthermore, their malice is not only directed outward but is also turned against one another. Much like snakes that are known to harm even their own offspring, these individuals do not merely refrain from doing good. Instead, they actively and cruelly work to cause pain and bring harm to their own friends and neighbors [העמק דבר].
