Deuteronomy 32:34Sefaria

Following a dark period where foreign nations prosper despite their cruelty, a profound shift toward comfort for the Israelites and impending disaster for their oppressors emerges. A piercing theological question naturally arises: how can wicked people act with such brutality and seemingly escape consequence? The Divine response offers a clear reassurance. God's delay in delivering immediate justice is never a sign of forgetfulness or turning a blind eye. Instead, it reflects a deeply calculated timeline for judgment.

The primary approach among commentators is that this delayed reaction focuses directly on the evil deeds, cruelty, and arrogant words of the nations These wicked actions are understood through an earlier metaphor of a bitter harvest, which is now being carefully preserved God keeps this metaphorical serpent venom to eventually make the nations drink it themselves, serving as a perfect, measure-for-measure punishment Alternatively, others suggest that what is being kept in reserve is the Divine response itself, namely God's anger, His decrees, and the specific disasters planned for the enemies

This justice is understood to be something entirely hidden, closed off, and guarded Oppressive nations might mistakenly believe that God has simply forgotten their actions, but in truth, everything remains securely stored before Him The guarantee that this justice is locked away in Divine treasuries is understood in two complementary ways. The first focuses on preserving the punishment in its absolute entirety. God intentionally prevents these nations from experiencing partial consequences in the present world. He ensures that nothing diminishes this stockpile of disaster, gathering and saving the punishment for a final day of judgment when it will be unleashed upon them in full force, without any relief

The second perspective emphasizes the absolute secrecy of when this justice will occur. The designated time for vengeance and ultimate redemption is a perfectly sealed secret, entirely unknown to humanity. The cruel nations remain blind to their approaching destruction, and even the suffering Israelites cannot know exactly when their salvation will arrive. The timeline remains a strictly guarded Divine secret, waiting to unfold precisely at the right moment
