Deuteronomy 32:35Sefaria

Divine justice operates with absolute precision, even when the wicked appear to live in peace. Behind the scenes of providence, the consequences for evil deeds are carefully calculated and kept in reserve, waiting for the perfect moment to strike with sudden force. The authority to execute this ultimate retribution belongs exclusively to God. He holds the prepared consequences, ready to repay the wicked for their actions

This repayment is not a random occurrence or a blind twist of fate, but a direct intervention of divine providence [שד״ל, רלב״ג]. It functions strictly as a calculated payment Rather than an emotional outburst of anger, divine vengeance is an exact, measure-for-measure consequence for their wrongdoings The retribution takes different forms depending on the offense. It targets physical enemies who inflicted bodily harm, while also addressing the spiritual adversaries who led others astray [אדרת אליהו]. Looking toward the future, this system of justice promises a dual outcome: punishment for the wicked alongside a rewarding payment for the righteous [אור החיים]. At times, this punishment manifests simply through God hiding His face; He removes His protective providence, allowing the wicked to collapse under their own weight [מלבי״ם].

The inevitable downfall occurs at the precise moment their footing gives way and they can no longer stand [אבן עזרא]. The primary approach among commentators is that this collapse happens either when the ancestral merit protecting the wicked finally runs out, or when their capacity for sin is entirely full Alternatively, this faltering hints at the end of days, a period when the foundational power of the world's nations will completely crumble

Although this downfall waits for their merit to expire, the impending disaster remains remarkably close at hand. This closeness does not necessarily refer to time, but rather to readiness and ease. Once God determines that the moment has arrived, the catastrophe is fully prepared for immediate execution through His countless messengers The moment their protection fades, the calamity will strike instantly without any further delay [הכתב והקבלה, אדרת אליהו], directly impacting the perpetrators themselves rather than being deferred to future generations [אבן עזרא]. A deeper look at the nature of this ruin reveals a connection to the physical process of vapor rising from the earth. Just as steam accumulates into a heavy cloud before unleashing a storm, the accumulated sins of the wicked naturally gather together to form the very tempest that will ultimately destroy them [רש״ר הירש].

When the time finally comes, the sequence of events will unfold with terrifying swiftness While human empires typically experience a gradual decline, the collapse of the wicked will be sudden and abrupt Hardships will strike one after another in rapid succession, leaving them without a moment to breathe Yet, within this swift destruction lies a profound promise. The exact same speed that brings sudden consequences to the wicked will equally hasten the future redemption and comfort destined for Israel
