Exodus 28:3Sefaria

The creation of the priestly garments is not merely a technical crafting process, but a deeply spiritual endeavor requiring a direct chain of divine command. Moses is instructed to personally convey the instructions to the artisans, ensuring that the garments are recognized as fulfilling God's will rather than being a personal initiative by Aaron to boast or to hire his own craftsmen In this role, Moses acts as a conduit, channeling divine wisdom directly to the workers [כלי יקר]. By appointing them as his agents, the crafting of the Tabernacle and its garments is ultimately credited as if Moses performed the work himself [אור החיים]. Furthermore, Moses addresses all the artisans together in public, demonstrating that he undertakes this task with a complete and willing heart, entirely free of jealousy regarding his brother's elevated status [אור החיים]. This public address also reflects Moses's intimate familiarity with the unique skills of each craftsman, allowing him to assign the most appropriate tasks to each individual [ביאור יש״ר].

The artisans chosen for this sacred work are recognized for their deep inner wisdom. The primary approach among commentators is that this refers not merely to technical talent, but to a profound moral and spiritual elevation rooted in the fear of God For these individuals, wisdom has become second nature, filling their hearts so completely that there is absolutely no room for evil inclinations or foreign thoughts Because the priestly garments, such as the breastplate and the headplate, carry an immense degree of holiness, the craftsmen must maintain an extraordinary level of spiritual intention during their work, even more so than those who constructed the Tabernacle itself

While the artisans work as a collective group, the divine impartation of their wisdom is framed in a singular sense. This suggests that the wisdom fills the inner heart itself [אבן עזרא], or that it is granted to each and every artisan on a deeply personal, individual level [אבן עזרא, שד״ל, נתינה לגר]. Alternatively, the singular framing may point to a specific individual who serves as the focal point of this divine gift. It could refer to Moses, whom God filled with wisdom to empower the artisans [כלי יקר]; to Aaron, who was granted the wisdom to internalize the spiritual impact of the garments upon his own heart [העמק דבר]; or to Bezalel, the chief artisan [צרור המור]. Regardless of the specific recipient, the fundamental lesson remains that all human wisdom is an outpouring of abundance from God [רלב״ג].

The ultimate purpose of crafting these garments is to sanctify the priest for his divine service. The commentators agree that the physical creation of the clothing must be done with a highly specific, dedicated intention for the sake of the garments' inherent holiness and for Aaron, who is destined to wear them These garments are essentially the property of the nation, crafted by its representatives on behalf of the priest who serves as their emissary [רש״ר הירש]. The act of sanctification involves initiating Aaron into the priesthood and separating him for this sacred role through the very act of wearing the garments, enabling him to serve The clothing does not invent the priesthood; rather, it is the essential tool that qualifies the priest for his work. Without the proper attire, he is considered a stranger forbidden from participating in the service Ultimately, as the artisans fashion the physical garments on earth, their actions and intentions are directed toward rectifying the highest spiritual dimensions in heaven [אדרת אליהו].
