פרשת תצוה

Exodus 28:5Sefaria

וְהֵם֙ יִקְח֣וּ אֶת־הַזָּהָ֔ב וְאֶת־הַתְּכֵ֖לֶת וְאֶת־הָֽאַרְגָּמָ֑ן וְאֶת־תּוֹלַ֥עַת הַשָּׁנִ֖י וְאֶת־הַשֵּֽׁשׁ׃ {פ}

As the construction of the Tabernacle gives way to the preparation of the priestly garments, the same rare and luxurious materials used for the sacred curtains are repurposed for holy clothing. The divine command regulating the collection of these materials places a strong emphasis on the moral purity of the craftsmen. The wise-hearted artisans are the ones tasked with directly receiving the public donations. Rather than purchasing the items, they accept the contributions directly, carefully selecting only the finest quality materials [העמק דבר]. This act of receiving must be performed with the exact same pure, spiritual intention that guides the actual weaving of the holy clothing [ספורנו].

There is a distinct difference between how materials were gathered for the Tabernacle and how they were collected for the garments. The primary approach among commentators is that while the Tabernacle donations were handed to Moses, the materials for the garments bypassed him entirely and went straight to the artisans. This direct transfer prevented any harmful gossip or suspicion that Moses might be using his leadership to enrich his brother, or that Aaron was demanding luxury goods for himself. A minority view suggests a different method of avoiding suspicion, proposing that Aaron and his sons actually paid for the first set of garments out of their own private funds before transferring ownership to the public [תרגום יונתן המובא בכתב והקבלה].

The craftsmen were granted immense trust. They received the valuable materials without anyone weighing, counting, or strictly overseeing the inventory, providing a full accounting only once the work was complete. Only individuals with unquestionable integrity are worthy of serving as public representatives and earning the title of the wise-hearted [רמב״ן, חזקוני, ברכת אשר]. The requirement for multiple people to handle the collection also established a fundamental rule for managing public funds, requiring that at least two individuals must always be appointed over a public treasury. This rule does not stem from distrust, but rather serves to maintain the honor of the community [תורה תמימה] and to protect the treasurers themselves from temptation or false accusations [רלב״ג]. Ultimately, the public participation in donating these materials is not because God requires them, but to give the people an opportunity to earn merit, bringing blessing to their own livelihoods and daily dealings [שפתי כהן].

The specific materials used for the garments include dyed wool in shades of blue, purple, and scarlet woven together with linen. Normally, combining wool and linen creates a forbidden mixture, as it blends opposing spiritual forces. However, within the intense and revealed holiness of the Tabernacle, this combination is permitted. In such a highly sacred environment, these conflicting energies do not clash or cause harm. Instead, they return to their single divine source, complementing one another and functioning together in perfect harmony [חומש קה״ת].
