פרשת תצוה

Exodus 29:15Sefaria

The process of dedicating the priests involved deeply symbolic actions designed to prepare them for their new spiritual responsibilities. Offering the ram and leaning their hands upon it marked a profound step in this initiation, allowing the priests to fully internalize their future mission and elevated status. This physical act symbolized their placement at the head of God's congregation, stepping into their destiny as leaders meant to illuminate the path for the people [רש ר הירש].

As part of this ceremony, they were instructed to bring forward one of the two rams that had been previously set aside [ביאור יש״ר]. Regarding which specific animal to choose, opinions differ. One approach suggests that either ram could be taken without any particular preference [אבן עזרא]. Another perspective, however, emphasizes that they were required to carefully select the finest and highest quality ram of the two [העמק דבר].

The physical act of leaning their hands upon the animal also contained a unique detail. During other offerings in the dedication process, Aaron and his sons stepped forward sequentially, with Aaron leaning his hands first, followed by his sons. Here, the action is framed collectively. While some maintain that this is simply a stylistic variation with no practical difference in how the ritual was performed [אבן עזרא הקצר], others understand it as a specific instruction. According to this view, for this particular ram, Aaron and his sons approached and leaned their hands upon the animal simultaneously, acting completely united in the moment [דעת זקנים].
